Our Services A-Z

Children's Eye Service

The Community Children's Eye Service provides care to children between the ages of 6 months and 8 years who live in Leeds. We also provide care for older children who have special needs or learning difficulties.

We provide diagnosis and treatment for vision defects, eye misalignment (squints) and eye movement disorders. We also lead the vision screening service in Leeds where all children are offered a vision test in school at the age of 5 years.

We aim to see new patients within 6 weeks of receiving a referral and the appointments are offered on an "opt-in" basis where parents can choose a suitable location and time to attend (availability permitting).

The Community Children's Eye Service works closely with the ophthalmology department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). Orthoptists and Optometrists who work within the service are employed by LTHT with administrative support based at St Mary's Hospital.

Referrals to the service come from School Nursing, Health Visitors, General Practitioners and Community Paediatricians.
