We deliver primary care services at HMP Wetherby Young Offenders Institute (WYOI) and Adel Beck Secure Children’s Home.
HMYOI Wetherby provides custodial places for boys aged 15-18 and Adel Beck SCH houses both boys and girls aged between 10-18 years old who require a secure setting due for either welfare or criminal justice needs.
We assess all young people using a universal health screening tool to make sure that all health needs are identified and met while they are in custody.
We have a mixed team of nurses (including paediatric, mental health and learning disability nurses) healthcare assistants and pharmacy technicians who work to provide healthcare 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our primary healthcare service aims to be equivalent to that provided in the community and includes GP, dental and optician services. We also strive to make sure young people’s health care needs are met and continue to be met when the young people return to a community setting or transfer to another secure environment.
We work closely with our partners to make sure the best possible care is achieved for the children and young people. These include the prison, education, social work, Youth Offending Service and the Looked After Children’s team.
