Fitness and Health

Adults should be aiming to do 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day. This is exercise that increases your heart rate, makes you out of breath and a bit hot and sweaty.

If you have persistent pain this may feel unmanageable. The key to achieving this is to gradually increase your exercise levels in small manageable chunks. Set yourself achievable daily, weekly and monthly goals. Our staff can assist you to set achievable goals and make them part of your self management program.

For example, you could start off with walking for 3 minutes each day, and if you manage that for a week then try 5 minutes, then 7 minutes and 10 minutes and so on.

If you don't enjoy walking there are other activities that you can do for example swimming, using the exercise bike, dancing, exercise DVD, yoga, aqua aerobics, bowls etc.

Regular exercise brings many other health benefits such as reducing the likelihood of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure. It has also been shown to lift depression and low mood which itself has very strong links with chronic pain.

The stronger, fitter and more flexible you are, the more control you will have over your life. The SpineFit+ team can help you achieve this and so allow you to live a better life despite the pain.
