Our Services A-Z

Workshops for Practitioners

The Leeds Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service has been delivering training courses in speech, language and communication for over ten years.

During this time we have invested in our trainers ensuring that the specialist knowledge required to train practitioners has been consolidated through continued professional development (CPD).

All trainers are members of:

  • The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • National and international training programmes such as Hanen and Makaton

All trainers continue to work in their specialist areas and settings, advising and supporting practitioners who work with children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

ICAN estimates that, “up to 80% of children in some areas of the UK are starting school" with speech, language and communication needs.

”An estimated 10% of all children have a long-term persistent SLCN; whereas upwards of half of children on school entry have more transient difficulties and, with the right support, are likely to catch up with their peers."

(RCSLT Bulletin 2011)

The Bercow Report (2008) and Better Communication (2008) indicated the importance of several key areas in the development of communication skills:

  • Early intervention
  • The training of professionals working with children
  • The links between professionals and parents

The Leeds Children's Speech and Language Therapy service works closely with the Local Authority through the Early Years and Youth Service, Special Educational Needs teams, schools, Sensory Service, Social Services and Allied Health Professionals.

We are a successful training team with a history of evaluations demonstrating a high level of satisfaction from previous participants.

A sample of previous comments are:

Good balance of activities and opportunities to reflect on our practise.”

“It was really helpful! The activities made me look at things through a child’s eyes and how I participate in children’s play”
