Dr Christine Comer appointed AHP Research Champion for Yorkshire and Humber

Leeds Community Healthcare (LCH) member of staff Dr Christine Comer has been successful in her application for the prestigious title and position of Allied Health Professional (AHP) Research Champion representative for Yorkshire and Humber.

This opportunity arose as part of a partnership scheme led by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Council for Allied Health Professions Research (CAHPR).

Fifteen champions in total will be appointed across England, forming a network of role models and research activists promoting the work of AHPs and encouraging their involvement in health and social care research for the continued benefit of patients. You can find out more about the role here.

As an experienced clinician and postgraduate researcher Christine felt this was an ideal position to apply for.  She said: “Being in a community healthcare setting helps me to understand the challenges as well as the potential benefits of embedding clinical research into everyday clinical practice.

“I am very excited about the appointment. It's a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of how clinical research can not only improve patient care, but also provide exciting development and career opportunities for clinicians, and bring economic benefits by driving more cost-effective healthcare services.

“AHPs have a wealth of knowledge about the problems patients face and what research questions need answering. They have the skills and passion to support the delivery of research and to implement research findings into clinical practice.

“The AHP Research Champion roles will help towards embedding a culture of research into all AHP clinical practice and will hopefully inspire some of our AHPs to become the clinical academics of tomorrow, ensuring that our healthcare services of the future can provide the care that is needed.

“I hope that my voice as AHP Research Champion will help to put us on the map as the community healthcare Trust where AHPs want to come and work, and the place patients know they will get the best care.”

Maureen Drake, Professional Lead for AHPs, said: “This is an excellent achievement both personally and professionally and a great opportunity for the organisation to be and be seen as a leader in AHP research.”
