Evidence Informed Practice

We make sure in CAMHS that we keep up-to-date with latest practice. We do this in two main ways:

  1. Through staff training, sometimes courses are run for all staff in our service and sometimes individuals attend externally run courses to do with their particular specialism.
  2. Through clinical governance, also called Standards for Better Health. These "standards" are national ones that all NHS Trusts have to work to. A small group of CAMHS practitioners "CAMHS Standards for Better Health Group" organise CAMHS meetings at which national updates and guidelines about new ways of working are presented and local initiatives are presented and discussed. The group also works with other CAMHS practitioners and sometimes professionals in Social Care and Education Leeds in producing protocols and guidelines for good care. A recent example is the The Guideline for the Assessment and Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) PL088.

If you would like more information about the evidence base for different therapeutic interventions Choosing What's Best For You: What scientists have found helps children and young people who are sad, worried or troubled (2007)  is a booklet that explains the latest research in this area it is aimed at children and families to help them make treatment choices.
