Communicable Disease Control Team

The Communicable Disease Control Team (CDC) are members of the community Infection Prevention and Control Team. The team are based within Leeds City Council’s Food and Health team and also work closely with Public Health England.

The CDC team provide a unique service in West Yorkshire and has been recognised as a model of good practice in communicable disease control and prevention.

The CDC nurses role is to:

  • Investigate, act and report on all individual cases and larger outbreaks of notifiable infectious diseases within the population of Leeds.
  • Visit any establishment and individuals homes to offer health related information and advice regarding their gastrointestinal illness.
  • Share selected information gathered during investigations with other agencies or departments in a confidential manor.
  • Provide a key link between Leeds Community Healthcare, the Local Authority and Public Health England, to try to reduce gastrointestinal illness within the population of Leeds.

The following organisms are investigated, each with their own exclusion or clearance procedure:

  • Viral gastroenteritis
  • Suspected food poisoning
  • Laboratory notifications of salmonella (including typhoid and paratyphoid), campylobacter, shigella’s, giardia, E.coli 0157, Entamoeba histolytica, cryptosporidia, cyclospora, listeria, cholera, Yersinia etc

The CDC service can be accessed by anyone who is experiencing or wants to report symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, for advice or information.
